Creighton Is Getting Ready To Celebrate The Nation's Birthday On Wednesday

Wednesday  is the nation’s 159th birthday and you can celebrate in Creighton and Denare Beach with a lot of fun activities for people of all ages.

 

It all begins with the Canada Day Parade starting at  11am on Green street right beside CFAR.

 

Then it is off to Creighton for lots of activities starting at 1pm. Creighton Rec Director Lindsay Shirran fills us in on what is happening. " We have switched it up this year as we will be at the Oval Of Dreams or Creighton Soccer Field. We have a few  fun things going on ,  we have the Flag Raising Ceremony, we will sing Oh Canada sunf by the Children's Community Choir. We have lots of great local  young entertainment including Modern Rock performing and the Silver Evening Star Singers and Traditional Dancers from the Friendship Centre. The Show and Shine Classic Cars will be at the Sportex parking lot and free cupcakes while supplies last."

 

Activities in Denare Beach for Beaver Lake Day will be starting at 4pm with a barbecue, free cup cakes, kids games, adult canoe race and fireworks starting at 11:45 pm at the Main Beach.

Diplomas And Bursarys Were Presented To Creighton School Grads On Thursday

Diplomas and Scholarships were presented to the 2026 Creighton School graduating class last Thursday night at the Sportex.

 

27 graduates received their diplomas and 50  scholarships and bursaries were presented.

 

Some of the major scholarships including the Hudbay, Fred and Pearl Schwaga Memorial Award and BGC Engineering Scholarship was presented to Keely Nivon. The Ray Daneliuk Memorial Trades bursary went to Gracelyn McPherson and Emily Johnsgaard.

 

IBEW 1405 bursaries went to Melodee Schultz and Tyson Rae. Creighton Volunteer Fire Department Department Bursaries were presented to Brooklyn Haley and Myles Koivisto.

Students Received Their Diplomas At Hapnot Collegiate On Friday

Students at Hapnot Collegiate were awarded for their hard work and accomplishments this past Friday with the 2026 grad ceremony.

 

A total of 38 students received their diplomas and 75 bursaries and scholarships were handed out.

 

The largest awards,  the Governor General Bronze Medal for academic standing and Hudbay W.A. Green Bursary for the student with the highest average went to Tofunmi Joseph.

 

The William B Friesen Memorial Scholarship for pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in the direction of Natural Sciences went to Scott Lytwyn and Tieryn Fisher.

 

Ray Daneliuk Memorial Trades Bursaries were presented to Drayden Lowe, Mason McIntire and Corey Rideout.

 

The Burbidge Memorial Bursary is an award for heart, perseverance, and meaningful contribution to others, exhibits strong character and integrity and for someone pursuing further education , apprenticeship or work place training was presented to Drew Rideout.

Purchases And Donations Were On The Agenda In Creighton On Wednesday Night

AT THEIR MEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK THE TOWN COUNCIL OF CREIGHTON ANNOUNCED THE PURCHASE OF TWO BRAND NEW VEHICLES.

A MACK GRAVEL TRUCK FOR THREE HUNDRED AND THREE THOUSAND NINETY SIX DOLLARS DOLLARS AND SIXTY NINE CENTS, PLUS A  WHEEL LOADER FOR THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIVE DOLLARS AND SIXTY TWO CENTS FROM REDHEAD EQUIPMENT IN SASKATOON.

COUNCIL AGREED TO AUTHORIZE THE MAYOR AND CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER TO SIGN THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE AUDITED TOWN OF CREIGHTON FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR OF 2025.

COUNCIL ALSO AGREED TO AUTHORIZE THE MAYOR AND CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER SIGN THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE AUDITED TOWN OF CREIGHTON NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT INC FINANCIAL STATEMENT FOR 2025.

COUNCIL WILL BE DONATING $2,000 DOLLARS TOWARD THE TROUT FESTIVAL FISHING DERBY SUPPORTING THIS YEARS EVENT WHICH ENDS AT MID NIGHT JUNE 29th.

COUNCIL ALSO ANNOUNCED A GENEROUS DONATION OF $5,000 DOLLARS FROM THE CITY OF FLIN FLON TOWARD THE MILE ZERO PROJECT.

Station Museum Needs Your Help

The Flin Flon Station Museum is  getting ready to open for the Summer  but are in need of some workers to kick off the season.

 

Board Chair Joe Buie tells us what they need and are looking for. " We are looking to open up the Museum on July 1st to kick it off for the Summer. The problem we are having right now, we have no student applicants to work at the Museum. If there is a student out there looking for Summer employment out there we certainly would be interested in interviewing you and seeing if we could get you employed at the Museum. Otherwize the Museum will have to be run by volunteers and the schedule will have to be posted based on the volunteers we can get."

 

They need two students either in High School or back in town from University or College. You can apply by calling Joe at 204-271-1351 and he will arrange for a resume and a interview.

 

If all go’s well the Museum will open Canada Day and run 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm.

Drive One For Your Community A Big Success

Northland Ford hosted their annual Drive One For Your Community fundraiser a few weeks back on behalf of the local SPCA.

 

There was a tremendous turn out and the dealership’s Mike Slipp wants to thank the community for coming out and supporting the event. " We had a fantastick day here on Saturday June the 13th at Northland Ford. We had 147 people take a Ford for a test drive. With every test drive Ford gave the SPCA $30.00 which we all know is a great organization. We want to thank all the community members from our Tri Community area who came to support the SPCA and their volunteers. A big thank you as well to the North Of 53 CO-OP for supplying Hot Dogs and drinks to everyone. It was a really great day."

 

A total of $4,410.00 was donated to the SPCA and Northland Ford continues to be active in the community and look forward to the We Scare Hunger Campaign coming up in October and also look forward to being involved in different events celebrating Flin Flon’s Centennial.

 

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Is Part Of This Year's Trout Festival

One of the biggest events and fund raisers for the Women’s Resource Centre  will be held in conjunction with the Flin Flon Trout Festival next week.

 

It is the return of the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes to raise money and awareness to help put a stop against violence against Women and Girls.

 

Allie Klippel explains the event’s history here in our community. " I am sure everyone has heard the saying  that you don't know a story til you have walked in their shoes. This is Men Walking A Mile In Her Shoes to show their support of ending vilolence against Women asnd Girls. It has been going on for many years and this is going to be our Centre's second straight year doing this after about a ten year absence. We brought it back last year and we are hoping to keep it going for many years to come."

The Trustees Of The FFSD Got Together One Last Time Before Their Summer Break

AT THEIR MEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK THE FLIN FLON SCHOOL TRUSTEES HAD A LENGTHY DISCUSSION OVER CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED FROM THE MANITOBA NICOTINE AND TOBACCO ALLIANCE. MANITOBAS ONLY NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION WHICH IS DEDICATED TO ELIMINATING TOBACCO AND NICOTINE ADDICTION FROM THE PROVINCE.

 

THE DIVISION HAS BEEN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN WHATS CALLED THE COMPASS SURVEY WHERE SCHOOLS IN GRADES 7-12 CAN GATHER ACTIONABLE DATA TO GUIDE THEIR STRATEGIES AND HELP SAFEGUARD STUDENTS' WELL BEING AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS. THE TRUSTEES AGREED TO PASS A MOTION TO GET MORE INFORMATION

REGARDING THE PROGRAM AND IT WILL BE DISCUSSED FURTHER AT A LATER DATE.

Diplomas And Bursaries Handed Out Last Night At Many Faces

Many Faces Education and Learning Centre held their graduation last night and presented diplomas to six different grads.

 

Tanisha Merasty received 5 bursaries including the Governor General  Bronze General, Flin Flon School Division, Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre, Many Faces Bursary and MLA Tom Lindsay.

 

J-LEE-ZEE DING LA SON was also a big recipient with 5 bursaries including the UCN Scholarship, Flin Flon Health Auxiliary, Many Faces Alumni, Women’s Resource Centre and C.U.P.E . Local 8600.

 

 The Other Scholarship award winner  was Erin Nickerson who received the Many Faces Alumni, The Founder’s Bursary and Flin Flon Fire Department.

Come Celebrate The Nation's Birthday In Cranberry

We are just one week away from celebrating our nation’s 159th birthday and Cranberry Portage have a lot of events planned to celebrate with you and your family.

 

Barb Bragg tells us it is going to be a pretty exciting day. " It starts with a Pancake Breakfast at the Elementary School Gym from 9 til 10am and everyone is welcome. It is the Fire Department that puts that on, so we like to go and support our fire fighters. 10 to 11 it is Bike Decorating, so anyone who wants to be in the parade can bring their bike and decorate it. From 11 to 1 will be the Parade To The Park and we will sing Oh Canada, the flag raising and there is Cake and Ice Cream from the local MMF. We wrap up the afternoon with games for kids."

 

Then at dusk there will be fireworks at the park also courtesy of the Cranberry  Fire Department. The Museum will also be open from noon to 6pm and feel free to stop by and check out the new artifacts that have arrived.

Kick Off The Trout Festival With Great Food And Entertainment

You are invited to come out and enjoy some great food and entertainment this Friday night with the Flin Flon Trout Festival Fish Fry.

 

It is taking place at the Chicken Chef parking lot and one of the organizers and volunteers Greg Kritzer invites the community to come out and celebrate this great event and kick off to the  weekend. " Chicken Chef is going to be putting on a special menu, obviously the standard and famous Fish and Chips along with some other items including the Smash Burger and some appetizers.We are going to have the band On Alert playing as we got some good feed back on them last year. We are going to try and expand our Corn Hole tournament and get some more teams and get the fun roling there."

 

 

Tickets are available at the Gateway for $20.00 and the event will start at 8pm.

Hapnot Making Preparations For Their Grad

Hapnot Collegiate is getting ready for one of their busiest times of the year with their Graduation Ceremony and different events  that coincide with it.

 

It all starts today with the Grad Parade starting at 1pm with grads gathering at Hapnot for the parade and judging. The parade will leave Hapnot at 1:30pm and the route will be shared on their social media pages.

 

Friday June the 26th is the Grad Ceremony with the Whitney Forum opening at 4pm. There will be photo booths set up for pictures.

 

The Under Graduate Awards will take place at 5:25pm followed by the Graduate Ceremony at 5:45pm.

 

The Grad March will take place at approximately at 7:45 to 8pm and will make it’s way down Main Street. After the March is over , graduates will have their first dance with their escorts. Following the dance will be a formal picture of all the graduates. The Safe Grad Social will start at 10pm.

 

Pukatawagan RCMP Investigating A Drowning


Last Saturday, Pukatawagan RCMP investigated  a possible drowning which had occurred out on the lake.

Officers attended to the Nursing Station and were advised that a 51-year-old male had been brought into the Nursing Station after being pulled from the water.

It was reported that the victim had been participating in a canoe race when he fell into the lake. The victim, who was wearing a life jacket, was quickly pulled from the water and transported to the Nursing Station where he was later pronounced deceased.

Pukatawagan RCMP continue to investigate.

Summer Adventures Await

A Summer institution, Summer In The Parks is ready to kick off another exciting Summer in Flin Flon  starting in early July and taking place for several weeks into the middle of August.

 

Flin Flon Rec Director Cait Bailey has the details. " Summer In The Parks is a really fun Summer Day Camp that takes place Monday through Friday outside of Stats. There are lots of fun weeks with really good councillors and it is a great way to break up your Summer and do something fun. It is open to ages 5 to 10 or kids entering Kindergarten in the Fall."

 

The camp will take place out of the Flin Flon Community Hall, 9am to 4pm. You can register for a day, short week or a whole week and it officially starts on Thursday July the 2nd.

Simonhouse Bible Camp Ready For Another Busy Summer

Simonhouse Bible Camp is gearing up for another Summer with lots of activities, programs and  different camps for kids of all ages to enjoy.

 

Camp Director Darrel Janzen says they are ready for another busy Summer.  

 

"Things are going to start up soon, this Sunday as we will bring our staff in and we will do a week of training with them,  and get them prepared to take on the campers and learn the safety routines. After that,  the kids will come for the whole Summer and enjoy lots of activities. Kids will get a chance to enjoy new things like Archery, stand up Paddle Boards, Kayaks, our Climbing Tower, those kinds of activities. We play lots of games and give the kids a chance to interact with kids in different communities."

Flin Flon RCMP Investigating Use Of Counterfeit Currency

Last Thursday, Flin Flon RCMP received a report from a local business that they had received a suspected counterfeit bank note.

 

Officers attended and were provided with the $50 Canadian bank note which was determined to have the same serial # as a previously reported counterfeit bill.

 

As of this date, there have been three reported cases of this bank note, with the same serial number, being passed within the Flin Flon and Creighton area.

 

RCMP believe other businesses may have been targeted and urge those accepting $50 Canadian bank notes to examine them carefully.

Community Safety Survey Has Been Extended

 

The City of Flin Flon have extended their deadline for the community to fill out the Safety and Well Being Surveys til Tuesday June the 30th.

 

The City really wants to get  your input and Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas Funk explains why it is important to make sure these surveys get filled out. " It is really important that everyone participates, this is going to really shape what our community is going to look like in the next four years. It will give us a tool to apply for funding for certain programs, like community safety officers, RCMP, what ever we need. We want everybody to have an opinion and have their voice heard. It is your chance and opportunity to say what you are concerned about and what you would like to see in our community. Also what is currently working? What are we doing well? We need people to participate and to see what our community loks like and what everyone is looking for."

City Of Flin Flon Hosting An Open House

The City of Flin Flon will be holding an Open House for the 2027 Board Of Revision.

 

This is an opportunity for residents and property owners to find out more about the assessment appeal process. You will also be able to ask questions and speak with representatives about the upcoming  Board of Revision.

 

It takes place at Council Chambers at the City of Flin Flon this Tuesday June the 23rd between 1 and 4pm.

Flin Flon Creighton Seniors Have Purchased Something For The Community

The Flin Flon /Creighton Seniors have purchased an E-Bike with the help of various grants and donations from businesses in Flin Flon.

 

The Flin Flon Creighton Seniors reached out to the City of Flin Flon to help get the ball rolling and Katie Anderson tells us where they were able to get the money from. " The big one was a grant from Age Friendly  Manitoba for $10,000.00. The Credit Union was generous with $5,000.00 and the Flin Flon Neighborhood Revitalization also gave $5,000.00 which will cover the whole bike. We have a Canopy for it and we are going to have helmets and train people how to ride it. It will be available for Seniors, people with a disability and the general public." 

 

The bike will be stored at the Tourist Bureau and they are hoping to unveil it during the Trout Festival Parade. They are planning on setting up a schedule where people from the Northern Lights Manor and the Personal Care Home will have special times to use the bike.

 

Details are still being worked out and booking information will be released at a later date.

Greenstone Is Holding A Business Fair For Kids

Community Futures Greenstone wants to give you the opportunity to be a CEO for a day.

 

Greenstone will be holding a Children’s Business Fair at the Creighton Tourism Office on Saturday June the 27th between 11am and 2pm.

 

Becky Cianflone and their Summer student Hailey  explain  the event. " It is a take off of the Biz Kid camps that we used to run. This is a one day version where the kids bring their own products and ideas and where they will set up a Market. You can expect 10 to 15 tables with kids running them,  including a chance to buy from them and we will also have chips and drinks available."

Flin Flon RCMP Investigate A Vehicle Collision At A Business

On June 13TH , RCMP  officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision at a business located on Highway 10A in Flin Flon.

 

Information provided to officers was that a backhoe had driven into the front wall of the business causing some damage. No injuries were reported from within the business which was closed at the time.

 

Officers responded and met with the 76-year-old male driver, from Flin Flon, who was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and taken into custody.

 

He was later released from custody for a court appearance scheduled for December 10th, in Flin Flon.

Creighton RCMP Warn Public Of Counterfeit Currency

Creignton RCMP are investigating after counterfeit Canadian currency was reportedly passed at a local business.

 

On June 15th, Creighton RCMP received a report of counterfeit $50 bills being used at a business in Creighton. The counterfeit bills seized by police all had the same serial number: AHU5885903.

 

Saskatchewan RCMP are advising the public to remain vigilant when handling cash transactions and to be familiar with common indicators of counterfeit bills, including:

 

- Counterfeit bills may have security elements that appear to be applied as stickers or overlays.

- They may feel different than real bills and may be easily damaged or ripped.

- They may differ in size, shape or colour.

- They may contain holographic images and numbers that do not match the bill denomination.

- They may have black line or bars on them.

 

Creighton RCMP continue to investigate.

 

National Indigenous Peoples Day Is This Sunday

National Indigenous People’s Day will be celebrated right across the country this Sunday June the 21st including a big celebration in the Flin Flon area.

 

Vanessa Campbell is the Elder Coordinator and she mentions the different events that you will be able to enjoy on Sunday. " So we are going to have the Nemihitowok Hoop Troop performing as well as Ron Burwash. We are going to have a gathering of the drum with Elder Margaret and Tipi teachings as well. I want to invite everyone down to share in the teachings in the tipis with April Head Nickel, Jenilee Lengyel, Allie Krasolowski and Christie Janvier."

 

There will also be fiddling music, opening remarks from community leaders, musical headliner Just The Boys, a free barbecue and face painting, culture games, bubble station and crafts for the kids.

 

It all takes place at the Creighton School Field starting at 1pm.

A Number Of Topics Were Discussed At The Last Flin Flon City Council Meeting

The City called for tenders and have awarded Tiger Calcium the contract for dust control, Dunn Rite Tire Sales the contract for sanding the roads in the Winter,  and Wintec Building Services for curb and sidewalk repairs.

 

The City has put a plan together for Boundary realignment which will include the Community Hall Garage, Community Hall Parking lot, Whitney House and Staff House, RCMP building and Flin Flon Airport.

 

The new Aqua Centre is getting closer to an official grand opening and have a couple of Fun Swims planned for next week. They have posted prices for using the facility on their website and continue to look for Life Guards to train to add to their staff.

 

A plan has been put together for the Pine Street Bridge where there is funds available from the Sidewalk and Accessorie  grant which will allow them to remodel the bridge. The City are pricing things out and want to start work by the fall.

 

The City has also approved a donation of $5,000.00 towards the Mile 0 Project which is located at the entrance of Smeaton Saskatchewan. A sign is going to be constructed which will hopefully  help promote tourism for the Flin Flon area.

Joe Brain Petting Zoo Opens Up Today

Some exciting news from the City of Flin Flon, they will be opening up the Joe Brain Petting Zoo for another Summer starting today.

 

They weren’t able to open last year because of the evacuation and Zoo Supervisor Rylee Reierson welcomes everyone to come out and visit the animals. " We are super excited to have the Zoo open this year, we have all our regular animals including goats, pigs, sheep and chickens. This year we also have some new animals including a Llama who is super cute and a snake, a Gekko, Bearded Dragon and even a little Turtle." 

 

The Zoo is open 7 days a week 11am to 7pm and there is an admission of $2.00 per person. You can also purchase a season family pass for $50.00.
