Northern Stars Place Fifth In Regina

The Northern Stars volleyball team made up of 15 and 16 year old girls from Flin Flon and the Pas  made their way down to Regina this past weekend for QCVC Under 16 tournament.

After dropping their first game, the Stars rebounded to beat the Wolf Pack out of Saskatoon  and SEAVC Black from Medicine Hat  to finish the tournament at 2-1 and finish fifth overall. That is very good for a northern team that hasn't played nearly as many games as the teams down south.

They made a good impression on the coach's and players in this tournament who recognized that this team from the North has a lot of talent.

The team is coached by Ray Shirran and the Stars will be getting ready for Winnipeg the weekend of May the 10th to the 12th for Provincials.

Bombers Are Heading Back To The Finals

Don't look now, but the Flin Flon Bombers are headed back to the SJHL Final for the fifth time in the last 7 years.

The Bombers punched their ticket with a 5 to 1 win last night in the Battlefords to sweep the SJHL Semi- Final against the defending champs  four straight.

Once again  the Maroon and White Express  played a very solid game and hit the back of the net just  33 seconds in,  when Koen Senft took a nice feed from Alexi Sylvestre and fired a laser over Logan Cunningham's left shoulder.

Senft had a great semi- final that included 5 points in the last two games.

Hunter Burgeson would tie the game on the powerplay when he banged in a rebound at the side of the net, but that would be the only puck to beat Harmon Laser Hume all night.

The game wouldn't stay tied for long as the Bomber Captain Justin Lies would score a powerplay goal of his own,  when he finished up a nice tic tac toe play with Alexi Sylvestre and Noah Houle that  would stand up as the game winner.

This was Lies league leading 9th of the playoffs and you could argue the best player in the playoffs so far, although the Bombers are getting contibutions from everybody.

Matt Egan, Anthony Piccininno and Adam McNutt all addded goals as the Bombers dominated in every aspect of the game and picked up the 5 to 1 win to sweep the series.

Harmon Laser Hume was outstanding once again and ended up with 35 saves on 36 shots and is sitting with a staggering .955 save % so far in the post season.

Laser Hume made a lot of timely saves and had everybody at the  Access Community Centre in disbelief with a lot of his saves through out the series. The big stop on the Stars Josh Medernach in game three comes to mind, when he got his left pad out to rob Medernach who had a wide open net to shoot at and couldn't believe he didn't score.

You also  have to hand it to Logan Cunningham  the Stars goalie  who played his heart out,  but they  just didn't have the horses in front of him that could add any offense to help him out.

Flin Flon has reeled off 8 straight wins in the playoffs and their 5 on 5 play is one of the biggest reasons. The Bombers out scored the Stars 20 to 8 and only gave up 2 goals even strength the entire series. They didn't give up a single goal 5 on 5 in the opening round against Kindersley.

This team is dialled in defensively and they are getting contibutions from every single  line and don't have to depend on their top offensive players to do all the scoring.

That was another difference in this series with 11 different Bombers  finding the back of the net with only  three from the Battlefords able to do so.

I would like to wish Head Coach of the Stars Brayden Klimosko and the rest of the Stars the best of luck heading into next season,  and thank them for all the great hockey they have brought to the province the last several seasons.

The Stars had one of the best seasons in SJHL history last year and not only took home the league championship but ended up second in the country and you know they will be back. They have a very strong program.

Good luck to Mike Reagan, Cole McCaig and the rest of the Bomber organization as they head to the finals once again. Here is hoping they can finally get over the bubble and bring home the franchises first championship in over 30 years.

It won't be easy  as they will face either the Melfort Mustangs or Humboldt Broncos, two very strong teams in their own right, but who said it was supposed to be easy.

That series is 2-1 in favour of Melfort after Humboldt won in triple ot last night. Flin Flon will open up the Canterra Seeds Cup Final against the winner one week from this Friday and we look forward to seeing you back at the rink.

Series Hits North Battleford

The Flin Flon Bombers will make their way to Access Communications Centre tonight with a two games to none lead on the Battleford Stars in their best of 7 SJHL Semi Final.

The Bombers out scored the Stars 10 to 5 in the two games at the Whitney Forum and fired well over 100 shots at the Battleford net minder Logan Cunningham. Cunningham is doing everything he can to keep his team in it and has been their best player in the first  two games.

If your Flin Flon you don't want to get to ahead of your self, it was two years ago that the Stars had a two games to none lead only to see the Bombers storm back and win four straight. Playing on home ice is always a factor and the Stars as we know are very good and comfortable at Access.

Justin Lies, the Bomber captain has been one of their best players this series, scoring a pair of goals in the opener on Thursday including the game winner. He also opened up the scoring with a quick goal in game two to jump start the very large crowd  with over 13,00 in attendance.

Anthony Piccininno his line mate,  leads the Bombers in points in this series with 4 and scored his first of the playoffs on Friday.

Secondary scoring has been huge with Riley Niven, Jacob Vockler, Anthony Bax and Keefe Gruener all having a great series so far. I thought one of the things in the Bombers favour would be more spread out  scoring and so far that seems to be true.

Flin Flon for the most part has been able to shut down two time SJHL MVP Kian Bell holding him to 3 points and just one goal. The Bombers will have to continue to stay on top of Bell,  because if he cuts loose it could change the whole series.

Ben Portner has been great and leads the Stars in this series with three goals in the two games including two on the powerplay. Battleford needs some of their other players to step up and help out offensively as Portner and Bell can't do it all alone.

There may have been some concern as the way Flin Flon went into the playoffs, under .500 in their last 10 games but really look like the Bombers of old.

Flin Flon has reeled off 6 straight wins and are doing so many things right, including timely goals, good specialty teams, secondary scoring, big saves and terrific  speed that neither of their opponents have been able to counter yet.

It will be interesting to see how these teams measure up on the bigger ice in Battleford. They say you are never in trouble til you lose a game at home and I fully expect the defending champs to come out flying tonight.

They have their backs against the wall and know how tough it will be to mount a come back if they fall behind 3 games to none. If your the Bombers you want a good start and will have to weather the first ten minutes and keep their crowd out of it.

If the Bombers can have a good first period, it will help  alot trying to take a strangle hold on the series. You can follow all the action  tonight for Creighton Furniture Flin Flon Bomber Playoff Hockey live from Access Communications Centre.

We hit the air on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10 and drop of the puck at 8:30 Manitoba time.

Hudbay Hockey Tournament Starts Tomorrow

The Hudbay Hockey Tournament will return for the first time since Covid starting tomorrow.

All the games will be at the Whitney Forum with four teams taking part including the Electrical, Boiler Makers, Steeves and the Mill.

Games start Saturday at 11am with Electrical VS Boiler Makers, 1pm The Mill against Steeves, 4pm the Boiler Makers take on the Mill and at 6pm it is Steeves against Electrical.

Action will pick up again on Sunday with Electrical against the Mill at 11 and Steeves VS Boiler Makers at 1.

The A-Side Final will go at 3pm.

Lies Scores The Game Winner

The Flin Flon Bombers have drawn first blood in their SJHL Semi Final Series with the Battleford Stars.

It was very close, but the Bombers pulled out the 4 to 3 victory, due in large part to the play of their home town captain Justin Lies.

Lies scored a pair of powerplay goals including the game winner just over 5 minutes into the final period. Lies took a nice pass from Jacob Vockler behind the Battleford net and beat Logan Cunningham five hole to whip the huge crowd into a frenzy.

Flin Flon also got goals from Anthony Bax and Matt Egan, while SJHL Goalie Of The Year, Harmon Laser Hume stopped 20 out of 23 for his fifth straight win in the playoffs.

Logan Cunningham was brilliant for the Stars and put on a clinic and ended up with an amazing 55 saves on 59 shots. Despite being out played for much of the night, Cunningham showed what a hot goalie could do and almost stole last night's game.

The Stars goals came from Ben Portner who had two on the powerplay and Hunter Burgeson.

Both team's powerplays were good with Battleford going 2 for 3 and Flin Flon 2 for 5.

The Bombers also did a good job containing league MVP Kian Bell to one assist, who I expect will be a lot better tonight.

Game two at the Whitney Forum is tonight at 7:30 and we are back with Creighton Furniture Flin Flon Bomber Playoff  Hockey on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com  including the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10.

Rep Team Coach's Wanted For FFMH

Flin Flon Minor Hockey is looking for rep coach's for the up coming 2024-2025 hockey season.

FFMH is now accepting applications til May the 21st.

Applications can be found on the Flin Flon Minor Hockey website at flinflonminorhockey.com.

Applications can be submitted to technicaldirectorffmh.com.

That will include all divisions from U-11 to U-18.

Here We Go Again

For the 6th time since 2016 the Flin Flon Bombers will meet the Battleford Stars in the SJHL Play Offs.

They met in last spring's league final where the Stars swept the Bombers four straight  for their second title in the last 4 years.

This year the Bombers may be  the favorites and will have home ice advantage after finishing first overall.

Both teams swept their first round opponent with the Bombers dismantling of Kindersley and the Stars were terrific defensively against Melville allowing just 7 goals in the four games.

Flin Flon took 3 of 4 head to head meetings in the regular season but we all know the playoffs is a totally different season.

This might not be as deep a team for the Stars who won it all last year and made it to  the National final,  but  it is still a very talented team featuring one of the top players in the country.

What can you say about Kian Bell who just took home his second straight league MVP trophy.

Bell has taken over right where he left off in the regular season with 10 points in 4 playoff games including 5 goals and in my opinion is a modern day Wayne Gretzky.

Flin Flon is going to have to be able to do something no one else has been able to figure out the last two years and that is stop Bell.

The Stars have other players that can score too, including Ben Portner and a couple of other hold overs from last year's championship team in Bradley Blake and Tanner Gold.

Throw in stud defenseman Alex Izyk and this is a very dangerous team.

One thing that may be in the Bombers favour is they may have more balanced scoring with the likes of Justin Lies, Carter Anderson, Alexi Sylvestre, Noah Houle and Jacob Vockler all having a good opening series.

They have combined for 33 points so far this post season.

Another big factor will be goaltending with the SJHL Goalie Of The Year, Harmon Laser Hume who is dialled in with a .755 gaa and a .975 save %. Laser always shows up for the big games and will certainly be tested in this round.

Logan Cunningham  has been great for Battleford and brings a 1.71 gaa and .940 save % into this series and did beat the Bombers in the regular season.

One thing for sure it will be fun and it will be loud with games one and two at the Whitney Forum tonight and tomorrow and back to the Battlefords for games three and four on Monday and Tuesday.

Don't forget to catch every single Flin Flon  Bomber playoff game with Creighton Furniture Bomber Hockey set to go once again tonight with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10.

Peguis Wins Their 7th Straight KJHL Title

Congratulations to the Peguis Juniors who continue to make KJHL history after claiming their 7th straight league championship last night.

The Juniors knocked off the PBCN Selects 6 to 1 to complete the four game sweep out scoring PBCN 25 to 6 in the four games.

After barely squeeking by Cross Lake in the semi's, Peguis certainly found another gear for the final.

Jeremiah Jacques hat the hot hand for the Juniors last night leading the way with four goals. Jacey Melnyk had the lone goal for the Selects.

Tucker ST. John was once again steady between the pipes for Peguis with 28 saves on 29 shots while Ethan Fechter stopped 39 out of 46.

The good news for PBCN is that their season is not over as they will host the Central Canada Cup later this month from the 17th to the 21st.

The Selects and Juniors will be joined by teams from the PJHL, Lakeland Junior Hockey League, Northern Junior Hockey League and the Interior BC Junior league.

Selects On The Brink Of Elimination

A change of Venue didn't seem to help the PBCN Selects last night as the KJHL League Final made it's way to the Whitney Forum.

The Peguis Juniors who are in pursuit of their 7th straight league title  took a commanding three games to none lead after a convincing 9 to 2 win last night.

The Juniors have now out scored the Selects 21 to 5 in the three games.

Lyle Murdock who led the league in scoring in the regular season led the way for Peguis last night with 3 points including a pair of goals.

Leo Kaludjak and Owen Angooteaulk scored for PBCN.

The Selects who have a number of players out of their lineup  including some key defensemen had no answer for a very strong Peguis offensive  attack.

The Junior's  chased PBCN starter Ethan Fechter on 6 goals on 29 shots and were able to beat local product Paxton Moore 3 times on 13 shots.

Tucker St. John looke very good last night and ended  up with 35 saves on 37 shots. St. John was good when he had to be including an incredible glove save early in the third period.

The Selects will need a win tonight to extend their season and try to get it back to Peguis for game 5 on Friday night.

Once again puck drop tonight is 7:30 at the Whitney Forum.

Selects Look To Rebound At Home

The PBCN Selects return home for games three and four of the KJHL Final after dropping the first two games in Peguis.

The Juniors,  who have won the league 6 years in a row dominated on home ice winning 5 to 2 Friday  and a convincing 7 to 1 win on Saturday.

PBCN is banged up and were missing 10 regulars out of their lineup and hope to have two key defensemen Bryson Francour and Gage Gogal back in the lineup for Friday.

The good news for the Selects is they played very good against Peguis on home ice this year beating them in all thee meetings.

Head Coach and GM, Gatlin Church says they are looking forward to getting back on home ice. " We arn't done, our backs are against the wall being down two games to none against a good team who is used to being in  these situations. We finished second this season and we arn't expected to win as this is Peguis's championship to lose. We want to play well on home ice and if we can have a good first period and build on that, I think we have a chance to claw back in this series."

Puck drop at the Whitney Forum is 7:30 tonight and tomorrow and the Selects are hoping for good crowds both nights that will hopefully make lots of noise and help them claw back into the Championship Final.

Dates Are Set For KJHL Final

The Keystone Junior B Hockey League final is set as the 6 time defending champion Peguis Juniors will face off against the PBCN Selects.

The Juniors are coming off a hard fought 5 game series win against Cross Lake which included a wild 7 to 6 win in game 5.

PBCN will play in their very first KJHL final after sweeping the NCN Flames in their opening series.

The two teams split the 6 games head to head in the regular season with the home team winning every game.

Both teams have qualified for the Central Canada Cup which will take place at the Whitney Forum April the 17th to the 21st with the Selects being the host team.

The league final will start tomorrow and here is the complete schedule.

It's A Sweep

The Flin Flon Bombers pulled out a hard fought 2 to 1 win last night in Kindersley and were able to  sweep their  SJHL Quarter Final 4 games to none.

It was fitting to see Matt Egan score the game winning goal when he streaked down the right side of the ice and fired a snap shot past John Macpherson just over 7 minutes into the third period.

Egan has gone through all kinds of adversity the last couple of years and it is the heart and soul guys that quite often make a difference come playoff time.

It was great to see Egan score the series clinching goal as he was mobbed by his team mates as they hung on to win the game.

Bomber captain Justin Lies scored the other goal which came late in the second period when he took a nice pass from Carter Anderson back of the Kippers net.

Flin Flon took a 2 to 0 lead into the final 3 minutes of the game  and Kindersley finally beat Harmon Laser Hume when one of the Perlinger twins , Cam was able to re-direct a puck in front of a big crowd in front of the net.

This was actually a short handed goal as the Klippers did a great job pinning the Bombers in their own end despite being a man down.

Once the Klippers killed the penalty they got the goalie out for the extra attacker,  but couldn't put another puck past Harmon Laser Hume who was outstanding in the series especially last night.

Harmon only gave up three goals in the four games and stopped 34 out of 35 shots and was the  big difference in the outcome last night.

There were lots of factors in the way Flin Flon dominted the series including 5 on 5 where the Bombers didn't surrender a single goal in out scoring Kindersley 19 to 3.

The Klippers scored two on the powerplay and one short handed marker last night.

Flin Flon's big guns also showed up with Alexi Sylvestre, Carter Anderson, Justin Lies and Noah Houle all picking up 7 points a piece. They also got secondary scoring with Koen Senft and Connor Ryan both picking up their first ever SJHL playoff goal.

The Bombers will now get a much earned weekend off and wait to see who they play in the next round. Flin Flon will get the highest seed that is left with the Bruins, Wings , Stars, Mustangs and roncos all still alive.

The defending league champion Battleford Stars ended their opening round series last night with a four game sweep of Melville.

The future looks bright for Kindersley who  were able to get back in the post season for the first time in 5 years and Head Coach Clayton Jardine has his team moving in the right direction.

Flin Flon will open up the SJHL Semi Final at home on Friday April the 5th against an opponent yet to be determined. Don't forget you can catch all the Bomber playoff games on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

Up Two Heading To Kindersley

The Flin Flon Bombers looked like the team that was number one in the country for much of the season,  as they took it to the Kindersley Klippers this past weekend to open up their  SJHL Quarter Final series.

After a sluggish opening period to open things up on Friday,  it was complete domination by the home squad the rest of the way and they took both  games handilly 4 to 0 on Friday and a convincing 8 to 0 win on Saturday.

There were some concerns about Flin Flon's offensive production down the final stretch of the regular season, but they had no trouble finding the back of the net to start the post season.

There is just something magical about the Bombers at this time of  the year and the guys Flin Flon needs to score did just that. Alexi Sylvestre and Jacob Vockler did a lot of the damage scoring 7 of the team's 12 goals to open the series.

Sylvestre had a hat-trick on Saturday with all his goals coming in the first period. Vockler opened up the scoring just three minutes into game one and added a pair on Saturday.

Justin Lies, Carter Anderson, Kylynn Olafson, Keefe Gruner and Anthony Bax also found the back of the net to put the Bombers in a nice position heading to Kindersley.

The SJHL Goalie Of The Year, Harmon Laser Hume continued his great play in the playoffs  stopping all 58 shots fired in his direction for back to back shutouts.

Specialty teams are always big in the playoffs and they were certainly a factor in games one and two of this series. Kindersley couldn't generate anything what so ever on the powerplay,  and were a combined 0 for 8 in the two games. The Bombers mean while went 4 for 8.

Flin Flon had the best powerplay and penalty kill in the regular season and took over right where they left off to start the post season.

Flin Flon fought hard for home ice advantage all season and it has paid off with a two games to none lead and the pressure on the Klippers who don't have much more room for error.

Saying that,  all teams are better at home and Kindersley was a much better home team than road team this season. The Klippers were 16-8-4 at home and just 7-18-1-2 on the road.

We all know how good the Bombers are at the Whitney Forum at 24-2-1-1 but they  also had the best road record at 20-7-1. This is also a very veteran team that have won a lot of big games the last few seasons and have lots of playoff experience.

Kindersley hasn't been in the post season in 5 years and will have to dig real deep to try and get even, but anything is possible in the SJHL.

A jam packed West Central Events Centre is expected for Tuesday and Wednesday as Kindersley is jacked to be back in the post season. You will be able to catch both games on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show both nights at 8:10 Manitoba time.

Are The Bombers Ready

The SJHL Playoffs will kick off on all four fronts tonight,  including the Flin Flon Bombers getting set to host the Kindersley Klippers in game one at the Whitney Forum.

Hard to believe with how long these two teams have been in the league, but this will be their first ever post season meeting tonight.

Both teams limped into the post season going 4-5-1 in their last ten games. This is very concerning for the Bombers who only lost 9 games in regulation all year, but 5 of those losses came in the last three weeks of the season.

Flin Flon is having trouble scoring 5 on 5 right now but the team is happy to wrap up the regular season and feel they are ready for the challenge of the post season. Despite their finish,  this is a team that put together the best record in the league at 44-9-2-1 and were ranked the top team in the country for much of the year.

They are struggling offensively but with their potent line-up could break out at any point with the likes of Justin Lies, Jacob Vockler, Alexi Sylvestre, Noah Houle and Carter Anderson all finishing in the top 12 of league scoring.

Another big factor may not be so much the Bombers offensive woes of late, but this is still a very good team defensively who gave up a league best 129 goals against which ended up being 77 better then their first round opponent. Harmon Laser Hume was a big reason for that and was just awarded  the SJHL Goalie Of The Year.

Laser Hume won 28  games this year to go along with a save % of .930 which were both near the top of the league.

Defense has also been a big part of the Bombers success in the playoffs the last few years and has allowed them to get into the league final, 4 of the last 6 years.

Head Coach and GM, Mike Reagan who was selected the SJHL Coach Of The Year for the first time in his career feels their depth will be a big difference in this series.

" We do, we really believe in our depth, the trade deadline we wanted to make sure if we had any injuries that we had that depth,  and we would be comfortable with anyone who was in the lineup. It maybe hasn't gones as smooth as we wanted it to, but overall it has been a good year. We know our depth will pay off for us at some point in the playoffs and we have two guys that are injured right now that won't be available for us. Already having that depth has become important for us and it is going to become even more important as the playoffs go on."

Kindersley will get back in the post season for the first time in 5 years with Clayton Jardine who was actually the Head Coach the last time they made the playoffs which was an early exit to Melfort that year.

The Klippers grabbed the 8th and final seed, but I think this series may be a lot tighter than people think and let's face it all the pressure is on the Bombers. No matter what happen's this should be some very valuable experience for Kindersley who try to re-establish their program and become a top 4 team again.

Their top line is as good as anybody's featuring the trio of captain Logan Linklater, Tylin Hilbig and Brock Evans. Cody Jaman is more than capable between the pipes and loked very good against the Bombers late in the season in Kindersley.

Jaman finished the year at 13-15-4 and had a decent save %at .903.

This will also be a big series for former Bomber Brock Mueller who was traded to Kindersley the January 10th  trade deadline. Mueller wanted to finish his career as a Bomber and had a big impact when he faced his former team a few weeks ago.

The season series did go 3-1 in Flin Flon's favour with the Bombers out scoring the Klippers 18 to 9 in those four games, but we know the playoffs is an entirely different season.

I agree with Coach Reagan, I think depth will be a big part of this series as we know things always tighten up and it could be tough sledding for the good offensive players on both teams.

Both teams are also really good at home with Flin Flon's regular season home record at 24-2-1 and  the Klippers no slouch at 16-8-4. If Kindersley can steal one of the first two at the Forum, we may be in for a long series.

No matter what go's down, you will have the best seat in the house as every single Flin Flon Bomber game will be broadcast on 102.9 CFAR nd flinflononline.com including tonight with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10.
