The Canadian Centre for Safer Communities are a National non profit organization that has been contracted by Manitoba Justice to create a unique wellness and safety plan for 12 different communities in Manitoba.

Flin Flon has been selected as one of the communities that might benefit from the development of  a plan of this nature.

Stacey Colliver is the Director of Research and Services, and she lets us know where they are with their plan for Flin Flon which includes results from a recent survey. " So we received a great number of surveys, I believe we received around 800, so thanks to everyone who did that. We are conducting the analysis of the data right now. What we also do while we look at the survey results is we conduct community engagement. So we have conversations with people in the community about their experiences to either validate what we see in the survey results or to just add aditional information. We want to make sure we capture as many perspectives as possible."

They will be meeting with the Steering Committee from Flin Flon in October to present the results from all the data that has been collected from the past few months. Then they will start some action planning with the Steering Committee with the goal to have the plan completed in the late Fall.

A public document will then be put together with the public able to view the document on the City of Flin Flon website and  Facebook page.

Maggie (Margaret) CARDINAL is WANTED by Cranberry Portage RCMP on an endorsed warrant for Failure to comply with release order conditions dating back to 2025.

CARDINAL is described as 5’4” tall, approximately 154 lbs with black hair, brown eyes with a medium build.

Officers have not been able to locate CARDINAL, and she is known to frequent Flin Flon.

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of CARDINAL, they are asked to call Cranberry Portage RCMP at 204-472-4040.

Another Blue Berry Jam has wrapped up with thousands of people getting a chance to enjoy a lot of great music and Northern hospitality at the Flin Flon Tourist Bureau  Campground.

Crystal Kolt was amazed with how things went and the great work by the volunteers and organizers. " Well you know I think the team brought this up to another level. The Committee did a fabulous job in terms of everything from  security to  vendors, to  entertainment with all the acts. The attendance and volunters, Debbie McDonald and Ellie Spencer who organized the volunteers did a sensational job."

The folks from Blue Berry Jam would like to hear your thoughts on how they can make the festival even better. There is a survey on their Facebook page which asks 15 questions and will only take a couple minutes of your time.

The Town of Creighton’s Water Works Financial Overview for 2025 and the supporting documents are available at the Town Office.

You can stop by anytime during regular business hours between 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

The documents will include a Waterworks Financial Overview for 2025. It will also include total revenue, expenditures and the current ratio.

There will also be a Drinking Water Quality and Compliance annual notice, a Water Works and Sewage System assessment and Capital Plans and source of funding reserves.

Town of the Pas Mayor Andre Murphy officially stepped down as mayor on Monday, August 10th, after eight years of municipal service, including the last four as mayor.

In a statement, the outgoing mayor says the decision was difficult, but the opportunity to be closer to family and grandchildren made it the right choice.

The mayor thanked residents and colleagues for their support, challenges and partnership over the years.

While leaving office, the mayor says The Pas will always be home, adding that this is not goodbye, but more of a “see you later.”

A popular program at the Flin Flon Public Library is ready to make it’s return in September.

It is called Read To Me and is designed for pre school children and their care givers  a couple times a week. Laurence Gillespie is the facilitator and he explains the program. " Well it is a program for pre-schoolers and their care givers, their Parents or Grand Parents. The whole point is to encourage an interest in reading for kids before they even start school. There is all sorts of data out there that says that kids that read at home with their care givers, will have huge implications for their long time academic performance."

It is absolutely free and an official start time will be released in the next few weeks.

Another busy week for the City Of Flin Flon Public Works Committee who have been dealing with several underground infrastructure repairs , and getting ready for seasonal maintenance.

Crews continue to work on water main repairs as maintaining the aging underground infrastructure remains a significant part of the day to day operations. Work has begun on a failed drainage manhole in the Uptown area. Crews are repairing the failure and restoring the drainage infrastructure.

Cross Walk painting will begin this week throughout the community. Drivers are asked to watch for crews and equipment working on or near the roadway and to drive carefully when travelling through these areas.

After the Cross Walk painting work, crews will begin transitioning to the regular Hydrant Flushing program.

Over the next few weeks residents will see considerable contractor work and disruptions on our roads and sidewalks with multiple projects happening at the same time.

The City of Flin Flon asks for your patience with detours, temporary closures, traffic delays, construction equipment and restricted access in certain areas.

The good news is you will see remarkable progress once all this work is finished.

A group of citizens from Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach have formed a community group called Caring For Our Community.

They have been in operation since June and have been holding meetings with members of City Council to try to find a way to curb the crime and violence in our area.

Karen Rasmussen is one of the people that spear headed the group and she tells us how this group came about and what they are looking to accomplish. 

" The group came about from citizens that are very concerned about the future of Flin Flon, Creighton Denare Beach and the surrounding areas. So we met with the Councillors of the City and asked what we could do to help to get things done. We need Shelters, Drug Addiction Councelling and many many things."

This group is going to have an opportunity to meet with the Canadian Centre For Safer Communities to go over some ideas and strategies and help with  a plan moving  forward.

Information from this meeting will be discussed at later meetings throughout the next few weeks,  and if you are interested in getting involved and finding out more they get together the first and fourth Monday of each month at City Council Chambers at 7pm.

Northlands College in Creighton has designed an Adult 12 program to help individuals get their Grade 12 standing.

Administrator Tim Babcock shares the details. " The program starts on the last day of August heading into September and it is for anyone who needs their Grade 12 Standing. You take a minimum of 5 credits at the 30 level which is your Grade 12 in Saskatchewan and two Electives. If you are thinking about it but you aren't ready for that, you can also take some classes at the Grade 10 level as kind of a pathway to get into Grade 12. This is good if you haven't been in school for a while and need to do some up grading."

Areas of study include English Language Arts, Financial Literacy, Math, Science, Indigenous Studies and 30 Level Electives.

Entry requirements include minimum 18 years of age and out of High School for a year. Grade 10 standing or score at an Adult 12 level on an academic assessment.

On Sunday August 9th, Thompson RCMP received a report of a missing 41-year-old male.

Toban Apetagon was last seen leaving his residence on the evening of August 8^th  on Robinson Way but has not been seen since.

Despite an extensive search aided by a drone, he has not been located.

Toban’s family and police are concerned for his wellbeing.

Toban is described as 6’1” tall, with a slim build and long black hair. He was last seen wearing a black sweater, blue jeans, and black shoes.

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts or has seen Toban, they are asked to contact the Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909/6911.

Exciting news for UCN in Flin Flon, after several years of planning and hard work they are ready to introduce  student housing.

Jackie Rechenmacher the Communications and Event Coordinator says this is huge for Flin Flon and the North. " I think it's a great opportunity to have housing available within Flin Flon, so students are able to access programming. They will also be able to access University programming like Nursing and Readiness For Mining and be able to live in Flin Flon and not have to  look else where."

The Grand Opening will include remarks from UCN Leadership, Government and Community representatives, a tour of the facility and a barbecue.

This event is open to the entire community and surrounding area and UCN look forward to sharing this celebration with the entire region on Monday August the 24^th starting at 11am.

The latest City Beat Program took place last Wednesday on 102.9 CFAR with Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas Funk and Councillor Mike Slipp both in studio to discuss a number of topics.

The first thing on the agenda was the Municipal Election which will take place in Flin Flon on Wednesday October the 28^th. One of the points that they wanted to get across was the different things to expect if you are thinking about running for either Mayor or City Councillor.

Councillor Slipp talks about how the past 4 years have gone for him. " This is one of the most rewarding important thngs I have done in my life. It can be painful on days, trust us but the rewards are so much more. When we see sidewalks being done, bridges being built, a new swimming pool."

Three people have been arrested after robberies in the Little Red River and La Ronge areas.

On August 2^nd  Prince Albert RCMP received a report that two people with firearms threatened an individual, assaulted them and stole their SUV and personal items at a residence in the community of Little Red River. The suspects fled in the stolen SUV.

The victim was transported to hospital by EMS with injuries described as non-life threatening in nature.

Prince Albert RCMP continued to investigate the whereabouts of the stolen SUV and suspects.

The following day, La Ronge RCMP received a report that three people with firearms threatened two individuals, assaulted them and stole their truck on Highway #2, south of La Ronge. The suspects were driving a vehicle matching the stolen SUV’s description, before stealing the truck and abandoning the SUV at the scene.

 .

Officers set up a tire deflation device in the community of Little Red River, which the stolen truck ran over. Shortly after, the stolen truck came to a stop. Two females were arrested in the truck. A male exited the truck and fled on foot before being arrested.

As a result of continued investigation, 26-year-old Brandon Corrigal from Sturgeon Lake First Nation is charged with multiple offenses including  two counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited.

22-year-old Acotia Bradfield from La Ronge is charged with multiple offenses including three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.00.

27-year-old Kara Halkett from Little Red River is charged with multiple offenses including three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.00.

The Flin Flon Public Library have announced their biggest fundraiser of the year with the return of their annual 50/50 draw.

Library Administrator Lisa Slugoski explains how this year’s draw will work." We usually host two a year, but this year we decided just to do one. So we have one running that started at the beginning of August and it is running now and we are doing  it different this year. We are running it the same way Blue Berry Jam does and we are hosting it all online on a platform called Funding Change. You can purchase tickets by visiting our website and Facebook page and click on the link. You can also stop by the Library and pay cash if you prefer not to do it online."

Tickets are one for $5.00, three for $10.00 and ten for $20.00. The draw will take place on December the 11^th at 1pm . Funds from the draw will be used for purchasing new books and funding new library programming. They will be purchasing new craft supplies and programming supplies to run all of their programs with lots of exciting events to be announced in the Fall.

Wednesday September the 2^nd, the Village of Denare Beach will be holding a By- Election for Mayor.

Three candidates have put their name forward including Dale Holmgren, Jennifer Hysert and Karen Thomson. Denare Beach will be looking for a successor to long time Mayor Carl Lentowicz who passed away in February.

Polls will open at the Denare Beach Administration Office on Wednesday September the 2^nd between 9am to 4pm and the Advanced Poll will take place on Wednesday August the 26^th between 4 and 8pm.

For any residents who can’t make it out or are still displaced there will be a Mail In Ballot . You will still need to provide some id with a Denare Beach address by Wednesday August the 19^th. Stop by the Village Office or e-mail denarebeach@sasktel.net.

Saskatchewan Cancer Agency will be bringing their mobile mammography unit to Creighton. Known as Breast Check – this breast cancer screening opportunity is designed for women over the age of 40 with no symptoms. Laurie Pearce, early detection coordinator gives us the details.

" They don't need a health care provider  referral , so that is very convenient. So we encourage women to book while it is in there community, so they don't have to travel a great distance to have a screening. The goal is early detection saves lives,  and by having regular screenings and if there was something there we would find it early. It would likely be more treatable and the outcomes would be better."

The mobile bus where the mammograms take place will be at the Creighton Sportex parking lot from August 17-21. You must have an active Saskatchewan Health card to book. Appointments are limited so they ask that you reserve a spot early. Call 1855-584-8228 to confirm a time for a screening mammogram.

Hudbay minerals has published   it’s second quarter financial earnings as well as announced a change in leadership .The company as a whole  reported $631 million in revenue, while producing 28,000 tonnes of copper and 51,000 ounces of gold.

In Manitoba, Hudbay produced 40,000 ounces of gold, 2,300 tonnes of copper, 4,800 tonnes of zinc and 209,000 ounces of silver.

Production declined from the first quarter because of lower tonnes milled, though the company expects higher second-half output due to grade sequencing and greater ore output from Lalor.

The company faced labour availability constraints at Lalor during the quarter but said corrective steps are underway.

A June hoist gearbox failure at Lalor was repaired within several days using a critical spare; the company does not expect it to be a continuing problem.

 Hudbay said it is working toward an updated long-term profile for the Snow Lake operations based on reserves, with a potential enhanced five-year gold-production profile.

Hudbay also announced executive changes. Eugene Lei was appointed President and Chief Financial Officer, while Rob Carter was named Chief Operating Officer. Carter will succeed Andre Lauzon, who plans to retire at the end of September.

The Blue Berry Jam Music Gathering begins today celebrating its 7^th active year in our community.  There will be two musical venues once again ; with the outdoor main stage at the tourist bureau campground and the Rotary Wheel will host the Blueberry Wine Bar. Last year’s event drew 9161 people. Over 100 performers wil be showcasing their talent over the 3 days.  Coordinator Debbie McDonald lets us know how many volunteers it takes to properly run the festival and the schedule.

" Well at all times we have to have 42 people on site with volunteer t-shirts on to meet our liquor and licensing regulations People talk about how safe they feel there, how clean it is , we pick up the garbage on a regular basis. Our board has been working in the background meeting since September. We are going to be there on Friday from 4 til 1am, Saturday from noon to 1am and Sunday from noon to 10pm."

The committee advises that you park in the old extra foods parking lot and on the north side of the Walmart parking lot. They ask that you do not park on Dadson Row or at the Canadian tire portion of the parking lot. BUCK is described as 5’5” tall, approximately 150 lbs with brown hair, brown eyes with a slender build.

Officers have not been able to locate Buck, he is known to frequent Flin Flon. However, he may also be in the communities of Dauphin, Ethelbert or Winnipeg.

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of BUCK, they are asked to call Cranberry Portage RCMP at 204-472-4040.

Flin Flon will be holding a Municipal Election on Wednesday October the 28^th and Community Futures Greenstone will be holding a couple of Pre Election information sessions to give people a better idea on how the process works.

General Manager Becky Cianflone explains what the information sessions are all about. “So, we’re offering two options for folks who want a little bit more information on what it means to run for council, what the process is, and also a little bit about what you can expect if you are elected. So, we have a virtual session that’s going to be happening Wednesday, September 2^nd and then we’re also going to offer an in-person session in Flin Flon on Thursday, September 3^rd.”

Both sessions are free and the event will include Election and effective Governance information, you will get to hear from experienced council members and networking.

The Virtual Session is on Wednesday September the 2^nd from 7 to 8pm via Zoom, with a link provided upon RSVP. The In Person Session will be on Thursday September the 3^rd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at City Hall.

On August 3^rd, Thompson Rural RCMP received a report of a missing male in Kelsey, Manitoba, who went missing earlier in the day

Upon arrival, officers were informed that James Redmond, 60, from Alberta, was known to go fishing from the shore of the Nelson River.

Officers searched along the shoreline near his cabin, and gear belonging to James was located approximately 200 metres upstream from the dam at Kelsey Generating Station. Police believe this may be where he entered into the Nelson River.

RCMP drones and a private diving company are on scene to assist with the ongoing search.

Thompson Rural RCMP continues to investigate.

Businesses in Creighton and the surrounding area are encouraged to complete a confidential business survey. Whether your business experienced significant impacts, minor disruptions, or new opportunities as a result of the wildfires, your experience is important.

• Identify the economic impacts experienced by local businesses

• Understand current recovery needs and ongoing challenges

Flin Flon has welcomed a new business as long time residents Tanya and Jefferson Benoit have started a  mobile cat and dog grooming business by the name of Kings Cat Grooming.

The business has been open for a the last few weeks  and Tanya Benoit talks about how they decided to start this business. " It came on very quickly actually, one of the girls we were going to locally recently  quit the business. We were driving our cat to Winnipeg to get groomed and I just felt like this shouldn't be done. So June 6th was when we went down for our last appointment for grooming and June 13th was when we decided to do this."

They have a van that is totally equipped and they will come right to your residence. They are planning on adding a website and building a brick and mortar building on their property very soon.

The Public Works Committee for the City of Flin Flon  continue to be very busy , completing a lot of tasks as they  continue to improve the City’s infrastructure.

Work has begun on another water leak in the back lane between Green Street and Centre Street. The repair will require another planned water shut-down early in the week. Once the repair is complete, crews will immediately begin back filling the excavation and restoring the road way.

The Main Street Sidewalk Renewal Project continues to progress very well. Work will resume today after the long weekend in the appearance and long term performance of the sidewalk.

Work continues  on North Avenue between the Primary Health Care Centre and Community Hall, where new water and sewer systems are being installed in preparation of the new RCMP Building. The project is expected to last about two weeks.

Planning for the Pine Avenue Bridge replacement continues with the materials being ordered and construction to begin in the next two weeks.

Maple Leaf Construction is excited to announce the up coming start of their Road Rehabilitation Program. They will mill off approximately 4 inches of  asphalt before laying down  new pavement. During this phase you can expect temporary road closures, detours and traffic delays in various parts of the community.

Flin Flon is getting ready to celebrate their Centennial in 2027 and registration is now open for the Flin Flon 27 Party.

The Flin Flon Creighton area SPCA is holding their biggest fundraiser of the year, which is a $10,000.00 cash draw.

Tickets are $20.00 each and the draw will take place on October the 31^st at noon from their shelter at 1 Cliff road.

Shelter staff member Brenna Benko mentions what the proceeds of the draw will be used for: " The money is needed for on going costs here at the Shelter, just every day care for the animals including our vet bills. It is very costly to run the shelter especially with all the animals we have, as we have a full house right now. So it really helps with food and our staff and we need the raffles and things to keep going as we are not government funded."

The SPCA is now open 7 days a week for the rest of the Summer between 12 and 5pm.

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has provided an update regarding the Weir Fire located along the Sturgeon Weir Road, approximately 10 kilometres south of Denare Beach.

The fire was reported at approximately 5:00 p.m. on July 29^th  and was initially classified as a Rank 3 human-caused wildfire.

Firefighters responded immediately, with Type 2 wildfire crews, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) aircraft and the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department working together to contain the fire.

Thanks to their quick response, the fire was successfully contained by approximately 9:30 pm last Thursday. The Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department remained on scene overnight to monitor the area and ensure there was no visible fire.

Type 2 wildfire crews returned to the fire the following  morning to continue mop-up operations and will complete a final scan of the area before the fire is officially declared extinguished.

Crews have confirmed the fire originated in a cabin or cook shack before spreading into the surrounding forest. A fire investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the fire.

PBCN extends its sincere appreciation to the Type 2 wildfire crews, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department for their swift response and coordinated efforts in bringing this fire under control.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant, report any signs of smoke or wildfire immediately, and continue practicing safe fire prevention measures as hot and dry conditions persist.
