St Ann’s Parish in Flin Flon is preparing for one of their biggest fundraisers of the year on Saturday October the 24^th.

It will be their annual Fall Bazaar which will include a lot of different events to enjoy throughout the afternoon.

Bernadette Benson has the details. " We have got of course the tea room, and then there is the Toonie Parade with about 20 to 25 prizes. Those are donated and beautiful to win. We will have a Bake Table, Perogies for sale, the Candy Booth and tickets on a Quilt. This was donated by Rae Baumgartner and it is absolutely beautiful and tickets are $5.00 each."

There will also be a ticket draw for a Cedar Chest and a laptop computer, books and  puzzles, novelty items and St Ann’s Friday 400 tickets.

It takes place between 1 and 3:30pm and everyone is welcome.

On October 9^th,  Pukatawagan RCMP received a report that a male was being treated at the local health centre after an apparent assault.

Officers attending the health centre learned of another possible victim at a residence on Hunt Road. Police left and did find another injured male.

The 45-year-old victim was transported to the health centre in stable condition with a stab wound, but his condition worsened upon arrival. The victim was airlifted to hospital in The Pas where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services (MCS) arrived in the community to investigate.

 MCS investigators  along with assistance from Pukatawagan RCMP have arrested 41-year-old Gabriel Bighetty of Pukatawagan.

Bighetty has been remanded into custody. He is charged with manslaughter without firearm and assault with a weapon.

Pukatawagan RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP MCS and Forensic Identification Services continue to investigate.

Flin Flon is getting ready to turn 100 in 2027 and a huge community celebration is being planned.

Right now the important thing is to be registered for the big party and all the events.

You can now register in person at Flin Flon City Hall and the registration fee is $100.00 which can be paid by cash, cheque or debit. You can also register online by clicking on the link on the Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach websites at investfdc.ca.

Your entry fee will include entry to the Senior’s 55 and over event, two Fish Fry’s, Neighborhood Party, Club Membership and a Magnet.

A By- Election date for a Denare Beach Councillor position has been set for January the 27^th, 2027.

This position became available when Karen Thompson was appointed the new Mayor on September the 2^nd to find a successor to long time Mayor Carl Lentowicz who passed away earlier in the year.

Nomination packages will be available for anyone who would like to run for Council at the Denare Beach Village Office.

Requirements on being able to run include being at least 18 years of age on the day of the election. Is a Canadian citizen at the time you submit your nomination paper, has lived in Saskatchewan for at least 6 consecutive months preceding the date on which you submit your nomination paper.

You also have had to live in the municipality for three consecutive months preceding the date on your nomination paper.

As we  change  seasons,  there are lots of activities coming up to keep you and your family active throughout the next few months all over Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Creighton Rec Director Lindsay Shirran tells us what will be happening in Creighton. " We have a busy few months coming up here with our Fall programming. Our skate program is running on Saturday's with something for all age groups, we have various yoga's including Senior's, Gentle Hatha Yoga and Functional Yoga. Glow Hoop Dancing will start on the 18th with Kelly Blouin and there are still some spots left for registration."

The month of October will end with their Family Halloween Dance Friday October the 30^th at the Creighton Community Hall with pre schoolers at 6pm and school age children from 7 to 9pm.

We are now only two weeks away from a Municipal Election in Flin Flon  and Community Futures Greenstone and the Flin Flon Chamber of Commerce,  are going to give you an opportunity  to meet and find out more about all the candidates.

Tonight all the candidates for Mayor and City Council will be participating in Candidate Speed Dating at the Flin Flon Community Hall.

Becky Cianflone explains how the night will work. " So all our candidates have been invited to come out for the evening and we are inviting the whole community to join us.This event is a little different as the candidates do not get up and make a speech, rather we separate the group into smaller round table discussions. You will have a chance to meet with every candidate and have an opportunity to have a discussion and ask your own questions."

It takes place between 6 and 9pm tonight and the organizers are requesting that you try to be there by 5:45pm to get organized and ready for the discussions.

The City of Flin Flon are  two weeks away from wrapping up the construction project at Camp Whitney, and  they have made a lot of progress.

A huge thank you to Stack City for all of their  hard work, dedication, and commitment they have put into the rebuild of Camp Whitney.

 They have done an outstanding job and the City is very happy with the results.

There is still some clean-up, maintenance, and preparation to be completed before Camp Whitney is fully functional and ready to reopen to the public. However, they are getting closer to that becoming a reality.

The anticipated reopening of Camp Whitney is some time  in 2027 and the City looks forward to re-opening this camp to the public once again.

There are still a few more opportunities to enjoy the Flin Flon Arts Council’s Summer Time Serenade in conjunction with local business Aurora and Pine Bistro.

Tonight it will make it’s way to the Whitney Forum Lounge and will feature local artists Derek Kemp, Luke Marvin and Mike Spencer.

The Arts Council’s Interim Director Jon Davis gives us a background on what the Summer Serenade is. " Well the Summer Serenade was a program that Aurora and Pine came up with in conjunction with the Flin Flon Arts Council. We get some grant money to help emerging artists in our community and give them the opportunity  with a platform to play on. So throughout the year we have been playing at Aurora and Pine and a few other places. We are coming back to Aurora and Pine and they are taking over the lounge at the Whitney Forum."

They will be performing during  the intermissions of tonight’s Bomber game and after the game is over. So come out and support our local musicians, listen to some amazing music while enjoying great food in an amazing atmosphere.

Flin Flon and Adult Teen Challenge are inviting the community to come out for their  grand opening of their new Super Thrift store.

It take place this Saturday starting at 10am at the old CO-OP location at 31 Main Street.

Al Legore who is the Regional Director is excited to open up the new store. " It has been quite the process since the fires, but it is exciting to see us moving ahead and the Thrift Store is ready to get started. What we are going to do is have ribbon cutting at about 11:30 and sharing about the Thrift Store and how we help out the community. Then if the weather turns bad we have a big area in the middle of our store here where people can come and have coffee and cake. It will be a fun day to spend with us and we have prizes to and it is going to be a great time."

The Northern Health Region has announced their Influenza and Covid 19 clinics for Flin Flon.

They will take place at the Flin Flon Community Hall on Thursday October  the 22^nd  from 9:30am to 5:30pm, Saturday October the 24^th from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday October the 27^th from 10am to 6pm and Wednesday November the 4^th from 10am to 6pm.

The NHRA also invites you out to their Flu Clinic and Health Promotion Fair on October the 22^nd. Come out and get your Flu Vaccine and find out more about healthy living.

This past Tuesday, Sandy Bay RCMP received a report of a shooting in the community.

Initial investigation determined a firearm was discharged toward a vehicle, striking an adult male, who was taken to the local clinic with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature.

There is an increased police presence in Sandy Bay in relation to this incident.

Sandy Bay RCMP have arrested an individual in relation to this investigation.

No charges have been laid at this time. The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting continues and updates will be provided when they are available.

There were representatives from both Walmart and Extra Foods at the meeting via zoom  who had sent requests to Flin Flon City Council on having both their properties reassessed.

Both parties do not agree with the assessment and want City Coucil to reassess the properties. Council denied the appeals and now both parties will take their appeals to the Provincial level.

Nevada Danis the Manager of the Victoria Inn was on hand to question the Accommodation tax being raised from 5 to 7%. Danis is concerned with the increase that it may affect her business and it may end up being to expensive for guests to stay at her hotel.

Council commented that there is an agreement in place with other short term rentals in both Thompson and The Pas, but will definitely consider the Victoria Inn’s concerns very seriously.

The City of Flin Flon has also waved the rental fee for Community Futures Greenstone to hold their Candidate Speed Dating Event next Tuesday October the 13^th.

Council also wanted to remind residents about the Municipal Election coming up on October the 28^th  and let everyone know that all the polling stations will be located at Council Chambers. For anyone in assisted living there will be mobile polling stations set up at the Flin Flon General Hospital, Rotary Court, Legion Housing and Hemlock housing.

The Salvation Army in Flin Flon is holding a Fall Indoor/Yard Sale on Saturday October the 24^th.

It will take place at the Salvation Army Church at 3 Hemlock Drive and takes place between 10 and 3pm.

Nelly Brown mentions what the proceeds will be used for. " With this fundraiser, all the money that is raised we use for our social programming including our Soup Days that are in full swing and our Christmas Hamper Program. We are looking to the community for donations including anything like small appliances, household items, clothing. especially winter clothing and foot wear and Christmas items. Anyhthing a person has to give we are more than willing to take it in and include it in our fundraiser."

Pelican Narrows RCMP are investigating two serious assaults that occurred on Saturday, October 3^rd.

Pelican Narrows RCMP received a report that an injured teenager was located on the roadway in front of a residence on Wood Crescent. The teen had been transported to hospital by EMS with injuries described as serious in nature.

Pelican Narrows RCMP officers conducted patrols and witness interviews but did not immediately identify suspects.

Pelican Narrows RCMP then  responded to a report of an injured adult male on the roadway in front of a different residence on Wood Crescent. Officers administered first aid; EMS responded and transported the male to hospital with injuries described as serious in nature.

Investigators are working to determine if these two assaults are related and are asking  Pelican Narrows residents for their help.

Specifically, investigators would like residents who live on Wood Crescent to check their doorbell cameras and surveillance cameras for suspicious activity between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 3^rd.  Anyone with information about either incident is asked to report it to Pelican Narrows RCMP by calling 310-RCMP (7267).

Residents of Pelican Narrows will continue to see an increased police presence. If an imminent risk to public safety is identified, they  will notify the public.

Work continues to progress well on the Pine Ave  Bridge project.

The new culverts were installed this week, and the backfilling process has begun.

The City  are hoping to see the creek flow return to normal next week. Work will be continued, but the water flow will be restored.

 Once the road surface is completed, guardrails will be installed on both sides of the crossing, followed by the installation of a sidewalk along the north side. Through all major milestones during this project, engineers will be coming in regularly to inspect for quality control.

Paving is scheduled to take place once again  next summer.

There is going to be a music fundraiser for the Northern Growing Abilities at Johnny’s Social Club on Saturday October the 17^th with the doors opening at 7:30pm.

There is going to be a great lineup of entertainment including CC Trubiak, Chloe Peever, Caleb Olson, Bob Lyons, Brett Holland, Kevin Imrie and Rob Mote.

Deb Odegaard, one of the Board members of Northern Growing Abilities explains what their program is all about. " Well Northern Growing Abilities is an organization that is designed to make everyone ragardless of  their intellectual abilities feel welcome and participate. We focus on programs for adults and youth and their is life skills, cooking, baking, games and a very welcoming atmosphere and social place to be at home for people that participate."

The Town of Creighton has a new website.

This website will have all up to date information on everything you need to know about the Town of Creighton and it’s surroundings.

The site will include information on the Creighton Connection Bus, minutes from Creighton Council meetings, Bylaws and Policies, Utility Services, Business Directory and how  to get in touch with people at the Town of Creighton Office.

The City of Flin Flon will be offering free landfill access to City of Flin Flon residents starting today October 6 to Tuesday  October 20^th.

This free access is for residential garbage only. Residents are reminded that commercial waste and other non-residential materials are not eligible for this program.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of your residential garbage at no cost during the designated dates.

There are still some spots available for the Possession and Acquisition License courses taking place later this month at the Creighton Community  Hall.

Ryan Gray is the instructor provides the details  on what will be covered and who should be taking the course. " People who should be taking it include anyone who intends to inherit, loan or purchase a firearm. This course is designated towards non-restricted which is Shot Guns and Rifles. You only have to be 12 years of age to take it,  but there are some stipulations until they turn 18 to get a permanent one. Once they have that,  it is good for 5 years and you just keep renewing it after that. Things in the course we cover will be the diffeent types of actions, your pump, your lever, your bolt, semi automatic and your hinge. We will also look at how to load and handle them correctly."

Legion Housing is a 55 plus Senior Housing complex located on the corner of Green Street and Phelan Avenue. They have 30 units in the complex as well as a Common Area.

Due to overwhelming demand and limited space,  Legion Housing is going to do an expansion and will be adding  a second building.

Building Manager Shylo Peters has more. " The Legion Senior Housing Board has decided that we are going to do an expansion. We have partnered with the City of Flin Flon and they have donated us a piece of land. They have also agreed to assist with us a monetary amount to help us with the project. So what we are looking at is 20 new units that would be 850 square feet. Each unit will have their own balcony outdoor space. Not only the housing, we want to make it a Senior's community , with a raised garden and a Senior's Park. All kinds of ideas to make it a place where people want to grow old and grow old together."

They will be building on the corner of Spruce and Green and will be adjacent to the Zoo. They are looking at doing an RTM build and would to like to have the project completed in the next two years.

Following the recent bylaw change, the Main Street City Transit pickup location has been relocated from in front of the Post Office to the area in front of the Public Library.

New transit signs have been installed, and public transit service will now stop at the Public Library location.

The curbs will be painted and clearly marked shortly.

One of the workers Brenna Benko tells us what they do with the funds from all their fundraisers. " It is the upkeep of the shelter, it helps with vet bills and feeding of the animals. Obviously it helps to pay employees, and general upkeep of our shelter because it is pretty costly."

The Town of Creighton is offering their residents  a chance to apply for the Home Security Offsetting Grant in an amount of  up to  $200.00.

This can help protect your property, your family and your community by registering your security cameras with the Crime Capture Program.

The goal of this program is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration with the RCMP and the community.

SSR is proposing a new underground mining project near their existing Seabee Gold Operations in Northern Saskatchewan.

An environmental survey is underway and will be holding meetings in various Northern Communities to give you a chance to provide your input.

Meetings will take place in Sandy Bay on Monday October the 5^th at the Community Hall. Tuesday October the 6^th in Deschambault Lake at the Kimosom Pwatinahk Collegiate.  Wednesday October the 7^th in Pelican Narrows at the Wapawikoscikan School and Thursday October the 8^th in Denare Beach at the Village Office.

All meetings will take place between 5 to 8pm local time.

Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP have charged an adult male after a loaded handgun, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances were seized during a traffic stop in Nipawin.

On September 26th, Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP were patrolling in the community. They performed a traffic stop on a vehicle for a driver’s license, registration, and sobriety check. During the traffic stop, officers noticed open alcohol in the vehicle in plain view. Investigation determined the driver was impaired and he was arrested.

During a search of the driver, officers located and seized a loaded handgun. While searching the vehicle, 21 grams of cocaine, four grams of methamphetamine, 44 grams of hydromorphone, 84 milligrams of fentanyl patches, ammunition, weapons, cash, drug trafficking paraphernalia, identification belonging to other individuals and a wallet previously reported stolen to Nipawin RCMP were seized.

As a result of investigation, 39-year-old Jered Waddington from Nipawin has been charged with multiple offenses including operating a motor vehicle while impaired and carrying a weapon for dangerous purpose.

Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP continue to investigate.

The Canadian Red Cross is offering the in person support which will include Disaster Recovery Assistance, Emergency and Personal Disaster  Services  and Virtual Case Management.

The Central Canada Film Group is back for another season of movies at the Hapnot Theatre.

Tonight they will be showing The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty to coincide with this year’s Culture Days. Colin Davis tells us they are excited to be back.  

" We have a great season lined up for you and encourage you to always look for our posters around town and the bulletin board at the CO-OP. I am here today to personally invite you to join us this Friday at the Hapnot Theatre. We want you to pull into the parking lot, come in the front doors and we will be waiting for you at the top of the stairs. Come early and enjoy our pre show, snacks and drinks will be available and the show once again is free."

Doors will open at 7 and the movie will start at 7:30pm.

Flin Flon Parks and Rec is excited about the Halloween season and are pleased to be bringing back Boo At The Zoo, which will take place on October the 31^st between 5 and 8pm.

Rec Programmer Bryanne Roberts is looking for some support from the community. " So what we are looking for is if you live out of the area, or you live in an area and don't get much traffic for trick or treating. We are asking if you would be interested in donating your candy to Boo At The Zo and we could hand it out to the children who attend."

It will be a Haunted House for the older kids and there will also be a Fear Factor in a smaller room for the younger kids or anyone that doesn’t want to go into  the Haunted House.

If you would like to donate some candy this year, you can drop it off at City Hall and they will take donations right through October. The City will then give you a poster to put up in your house or vehicle to show your support.

 The City of Flin Flon is happy with the progress that is happening  with  the Pine Ave Bridge  project.

Over the past few days, crews have been placing sub-base material in preparation for the next phase of construction.

Soup Days have started up once again and the Flin Flon Salvation Army will once again be running the program out of the Anglican Church in the downtown area.

One of the organizers Nelly Brown explains the program. " Well to start with they are for anybody and everybody, we welcome the entire community. We host the Soup Days every Monday and Friday at the Anglican Church Hall. They are one of our partners, the other is the Steelworkers. They help us with our grocery bill and we really appreciate that."

The Salvation Army is also preparing for their Kettles season where they will be ringing the bells to help raise funds for their Christmas Hampers and Christmas Toy Drive.

There are still a few more events to enjoy at this year’s Flin Flon  Culture Days, with some fun events planned for this weekend.

The Interim Executive Director Jon Davis tells us what they have planned. "Well the Public Library is going to be having the Book Tasting, where people can come out and sample the different authors and genres of books and it will be presented like you are going to a restaurant. They will have different menus and you can take a look at all the books. The Quilt Guild is going to be having an open house on both Friday and Saturday where you can come and see the work they do. They have had a very busy year where they have been helping people from the wildfires."

The big event, The Wild Rice Cabaret which will take place on Friday night at the Flin Flon Community Hall starting at 7pm. The event will feature Norva Artists who will come out to paint during all the musical live performances.

This is a free event and you can bring your own snacks and refreshments.
