Bombers Will Induct 92-93 Team Into Hall Of Fame

More big news from the Flin Flon Bombers who continue to recognize valuable contibutors from the past for the SJHL Hall Of Fame Celebrations coming up in September.

Fresh off the announcement of leading all time scorer Tim Madarash going into the Hall, The Bombers will be inducting the 92-93 Championship Team.

This is one of the greatest teams in Bomber history who built a team on toughness, speed, grit and great goaltending, not to mention a lot of heart and a team that didn't know the meaning of the word quit.

The team was coached by none other than Norm Johnston who was already an established coach in the league with North Battleford and Yorkton, prior in coming to Flin Flon.  Johnston was able to come in a build a winning program in three years and turn the team around financially.

The team featured four local players including Rob Beck who was able to earn a scholarship to Merrimeck College in Boston when his career was done,  as well as Darren Johson, Shayne Hayes and Clarke Funk.

The legendary Mel Pearson helped Norm behind the bench with the Stallard's Dwight and Elvin serving as the team Trainers.

It all began with the Bomber's first playoff series win against Humboldt in a best of 5, and the team took off from there.

Flin Flon went on to beat Nipawin in the North Division Final 4 games to 1 and would face the heavily favoured Melville Millionaires for the SJHL Championship.

Melville was expected to win with only 11 losses the entire season, but someone forgot to tell the underdog Bombers and their fans that.

After dropping the first two games at the old Melville stadium, Flin Flon returned to a jam packed Whitney Forum and ended up tieing up the series at two.

People were arriving at the Whitney Forum at 5pm  just to make sure they could get a seat with over three thousand people in attendance. The Forum hasn't seen the likes of that since, and they were standing three deep along all the rails.

The teams would continue to dominate on home ice and forced a game 7 at the Melville Stadium. Flin Flon went into the game and upset the Mills by a score of 4 to 2 including an empty netter from Rob Beck in what would be the last time the team won a championship till the current Bombers did it just a few weeks ago.

A total of 5 fan busses made their way to Melville to help cheer their team on and you really couldn't tell who the home team was. It was electric with all kinds of objects and debris being tossed onto the ice and it actually looked like a Biology Experiment as opposed to a hockey game  at the conclusion of the game.

Flin Flon would go on to beat Dauphin of the MJHL in the Anavet Cup Championship series in 6 games and punched their ticket to the Centennial Cup in Amherst Nova Scotia to wrap up a very memorable season.

Congratulations to this tremendous group of players and coach's who definitely  deserve to be recognized by the SJHL Hall Of Fame.

Not only did they win a championship, but took the weight of the community on their shoulders and were and are still heroes today.

The 92-93 team will be recognized during the SJHL Hall Of Fame celebrations September the 23rd at the Flin Flon Community Hall.

SJHL Welcomes Back Familiar Face And Name

The Laronge Ice Wolves have made a very  big announcement that their hockey club will be bringing back coaching icon Bob Beatty.

Beatty is no stranger to the Wolves or the SJHL, where he guided the northern club to two league championships back in 2010 and 2011. Bob coached Laronge between 2004 and 2013 before moving on to BC.

Prior to that,  Beatty coached the Humboldt Broncos for 7 seasons which included a league championship and National title in 2003.

Bob brings more than 30 years in coaching experience at many different levels and made the Ice Wolves one of the toughest and most dangerous teams during his 9 year stint there.

The Ice Wolves are hoping that Beatty can bring his connections and expertise to help mold them into a top team once again. Bob will work closely with the new coach who will be announced soon as the Wolves continue the rebuilding process and getting back respectability.

Bombers Season Comes To An End

The Flin Flon Bombers finally saw their season come to an end this past Wednesday at the Centennial Cup in Summerside PEI.

The Bombers went into the game against the Truro Bearcats needing to beat them by 5 goals to advance to the Centennial Cup playoff round.

Flin Flon went into the game 1-2 with losses to Longueil in their opening game 1 to 0 and the Toronto Patriots 7 to 2 before rebounding with a 6 to 4 win over the Sudbury Cubs.

With their backs against the wall, Flin Flon played their best game of the tournament and played a solid 60 minutes in prevailing by a score of 3 to 1.

Flin Flon scored  two late first period goals with Reid Arberry and Ryder Knutson both finding the back of the net. Arberry scored his second  of the tournament when he fired a shot over the right shoulder of Bearcats goalie Louca Connolly.

Knutson scored just 28 seconds later when he also went high on Connolly to give the Bombers the start they needed with a 2 to 0 lead after one. This was Knutson's first of the tournament.

Flin Flon continued to press but couldn't get any more pucks past Connolly despite out shooting the Bearcats 13 to 8 in the second period.

That would mean the Bombers were need to score three more times in the third ,  and hold Truro off the score sheet if they were going to be able to advance.

The Bombers came out flying and the electrifying Daniel Morozov scored Flin Flon's first powerplay  goal of the tournament ,  when he snapped a low shot glove side on Louca Connolly.

Morozov was one of the Bombers top players in the tournament  and it was nice to see him finally  pot one and get the monkey off his back and put his team up 3 to 0.

Morozov scored his goal with over 8 minutes remaining in regulation and I thought with the way the Bombers were playing,  they might actually pull this off.

Unfortunately even with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker,  that is all the offense the Bombers could muster and ended up giving up an empty net goal in the 3 to 1 win.

This was Charlie Tritt's best game between the pipes as he did struggle in his last two games giving up 8 goals and vowed he would be better and he was. Tritt looked like the goalie who was the top netminder in the SJHL this past season who was also  nominated for CJHL Goalie Of The Year.

Tritt stopped all 18 shots fired in his direction with Truro's only goal scored into the empty net courtesy  Jake Todd.

With the win,  the Bombers finish with a record of 2-2 and were tied with Toronto and Truro and that is why it came down to goals for and against. Flin Flon did get better as the tournament went on and it was disappointing not to see them move on to the Quarter Finals.

It won't take away from a sensational season that saw the Bombers pick up their first league championship in 33 years.

Head Coach and GM Mike Reagan summed up the season on the final CFAR Post Game Show on Wednesday. " I have coached a lot of good players and teams throughout the years but this group was very special and so determined. Everyone accepted their roles, even the guys that didn't get to play very much, sacrificing their own agendas for the good of the team. They were so determined even after that big losing streak in October. After we beat Yorkton 11 to 0 to snap that 6 game losing streak, we never missed a beat, got on the same page and went after this. I was so proud to coach this great group of young men  and it feels so good to bring this Championship back to Flin Flon."

Flin Flon will graduate 8 players from this year's team including Reid Arberry, Maverick Deslisle, Pierce Yakimchuk, Xavier Fauchon, Ryder Knutson, Sam Ward, Charlie Tritt and four year local player Joey Lies.

All 8 players were very instrumental in this team's success,  and good luck to all these fine men who represented the organization and community with class and hard work. You will be missed.

I also want to thank the tremendous fans, sponsors, billets, volunteers, board of directors and anyone else who had a hand in this season to remember.

Nothing beats the atmosphere of the Whitney Forum, and it was a pleasure to call games in front of the best hockey fans you will find anywhere. Bomber fans also made their presence felt on the road and even in  the Centennial Cup there were a few hundred in attendance.

The Bomber fans were the topic of discussion at the Centennial Cup and Summerside embraced the electricity they brought to the tournament and building. They were by far the most passionate fans at the tournament and cheered for their team til the end.

The Bomber organization will enjoy the summer and prepare for their 100th year as a franchise including hosting the Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremonies in September.

Once again A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for a season to rember and we will see you real soon. GO BOMBERS GO.

A Good Opening Tournament For Hapnot Lacrosse Team

The Hapnot Collegiate Lacrosse team kicked off their season with a tournament in Powerview this past weekend.

Hapnot lost a pair of games to Murdoch McKay 10 to 2 and Leo Remillard 9 to 6  before rallying for a 5 to 4 win over Sturgeon Heights.

Logan Simon, Michael Pawlachuk and Ethan Pawlachuk led the way offensively with multiple goals each.

Garron Fisher had a standout performance in goal against Sturgeon.

Hapnot is now off to a tournament in Portage May the 22nd and 23rd. They play Niverville at 1pm and Portage at 3:30pm to open up the tourney on Friday the 22nd.

On Saturday May the 23rd they will play Transcona at 9am and Selkirk at 12:45pm.

First Win at the Centennial Cup

The Flin Flon Bombers picked up their first win at the Centennial Cup this afternoon in Summerside PEI as they were able to hold on for a 6 to 4 win over the Sudbury Cubs of the NOJHL.

After spotting the Cubs the first goal, Flin Flon reeled off four straight to take a 4 to 1 lead after one.

Leo Seitz, Connor Miller and Rhett Ewen picked up a pair of goals to lead the way offensively. The Bombers did a fantastic job as they were able to get to the net and create a lot of havoc in front of Cub netminder Iain Wintle.

Ewen's second goal late in the period chased Wintle from the game in favour of Matthew Vahramian.

The goaltending change sparked the Cubs who scored three goals in a 7 minute span to tie the game at 4.

Flin Flon looked a little rattled but got a big break when Reid Arberry picked up a loose puck on his side of centre with only 5 seconds left in the middle frame. Arberry raced down the ice and fired a shot over Vahramian's right shoulder with .5  seconds left on the clock.

That put the Bombers back out in front 5 to 4 heading out for the final period.

Flin Flon came out and controlled much of the final period and were able to fend the Cubs off the rest of the way as Landon Alexander put the game away with an empty netter with just under 20 seconds left in the game.

Charlie Tritt the Bomber netminder picked up the win making 20 saves on 24 shots and played well in the third and helped preserve the win.

The Bombers pick up a very important win to improve to 1-2 in the tournament and will still have a chance to get to the playoff round. Sudbury will fall to 1-2 as both teams have one round robin game remaining.

Flin Flon plays their final round robin game on Wednesday night against the Truro Bearcats, the Maritime Junior Hockey League Champions at 5:30pm Manitoba time. Truro sits with a record of 1-1.

You will be able to once again catch all the action from Credit Union Place with the pre game at 5:15pm and play by play at 5:30 on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

Charlie just back stopped the Bombers to their first SJHL title in 33 years going 11-3 with a GAA of 1.67 and Save % of .938. Tritt is also the only SJHL player this past season to be awarded an NCAA Division 1  Scholarship to Lake Superior State.

Nipawin Hawks Resign Tad Kozun

The Nipawin Hawks are pleased to announce the re-signing of Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun to a two-year contract.

Kozun who grew up in the community and played for the Hawks  has strong ties to the organization both on and off the ice. He suited up for the Hawks during the 2011 to the 2014  seasons before advancing to the NCAA with the University of Alaska Anchorage. Following his collegiate career, Kozun went on to play professionally in the ECHL with the Carolina Stingrays, Kansas City Mavericks, and Orlando Solar Bears.

Kozun joined the Hawks coaching staff in the 2021–22 season as an assistant coach before stepping into the role of interim Head Coach and General Manager later that year. He has led the team in that capacity ever since, helping guide the program forward both on and off the ice.

Tad guided the Hawks to a Fourth overall finish with a 35-19-1-1 record and got them to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons,  losing to the Weyburn Red Wings in 6 games in the SJHL Quarter Finals.

Nipawin have the makings of being a very strong team again next season and Kozun is a big part of that in helping build a very competitive program.
