Penalties And Slow Start Lead Lazers To A Win In Creighton

It was a rough start for the Creighton Kodiaks 6 man Football team on Friday afternoon at the Creighton Oval Field Of Dreams.

The Kodiaks came into their home  game fairly confident where they usually play well.

Creighton was 1-1 with a home win over ST Breux and a good showing in Carrot River the week previous.

The Kodiaks were hosting the Lanigan Lazers who were also 1-1 on the season.

Give Lanigan credit, they took advantage of some Kodiak penalties and a slow start to build up a 26-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a convincing 60 to 25 win.

Another factor in the Kodiaks losing this game was they weren't able to stop the Lazer running game.

Despite the loss, Matthew Lavis had another strong day for Creighton hauling in three touchdown catches, including a 30 yarder to try and keep his team in the game.

The other Creighton touchdown came from Ryan Grunerud, who scored on a Quarterback Sneak from the goal line.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk summed up the loss. " I didn't expect to spot them 20 something points to start  the first quarter, and then we had a couple of touchdowns called back because of holding calls. You think you score points,  and then before you know it you are second and 20 or third and 20 and you are punting. I think we were pressing and trying to do to much, but by the time we got into our game plan and comfortable the game was out of reach. That is one of those games you wish you could get back, but in sports unfortunately you get one crack at it,  and it definitely wasn't the result we were hoping for playing at home."

The Kodiaks will now head to Viscount to take on the 1-2 Vikings this Thursday night at 7pm. This game was supposed to be played on Friday but both coach's decided to move the game to Thursday, due to the Thanksgiving long weekend.

This is a big game for Creighton, and if they have any hope of making the playoffs, they absolutely have to win this game.

It will come down to the Kodiaks playing clean football and trying to stay injury free, and obviously getting off to a better start.

Creighton will return home the following Friday October the 16th to host Carrot River in their final home game, 4pm at the Creighton Field.

68-69 Bombers And Ken Baumgartner Inducted Into Manitoba Hockey Hall Of Fame

contributed by the Flin Flon Bombers

The Flin Flon Bombers organization would like to congratulate the 1968-69 Flin Flon Bombers team and Ken Baumgartner on their induction into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

The 1968-69 team was led by Flin Flon's own Bobby Clarke, who was the league MVP that year. The team won 47 of the 60 regular season games and won the WCHL Championship over the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Bombers then advanced to the National Series and defeated Western Ontario Junior A Hockey League Champions, St. Thomas Barons.

Six players from the team went onto play in the NHL and WHA and many others also played pro hockey.

Ken Baumgartner was born right here in Flin Flon and was drafted by the LA Kings in 1985. He played 696 games in the NHL. In those nearly 700 games Ken scored 13 goals, 41 assists and 2242 penalty minutes which is 38th all time.

Congratulations to Ken and everyone on the 1968-69 Bombers on your induction to the Manitoba Hockey Hall Of Fame.

Queens Are Zone Soccer Champions Again

Congratulations to the Senior Hapnot Queens Soccer team who have won another Zone Championship.

The Queens are back to back Champions and went undefeated at home this past weekend.

It was Flin Flon's turn to host and the home team did not  disappoint.

Hapnot went undefeated beating the Pas 1-0, Cross Lake 7 to 0 and a hard fought 3  to 1 win over Thompson in penalty kicks. The game was actually scoreless after regulation.

The Queens would meet RD Parker out of Thompson once again in the final and this time Hapnot rolled to the 4 to 0 victory.

Mia Desjarlais led the way offensively for the Queens scoring three of the four goals. The other Hapnot goal was scored by Ashlyn Peever.

Congratulations to Head Coach Teli Keramydas and the rest of the Queens on their Zone victory and good luck at Provincials in Winkler October the 16th and 17th.

The Hapnot Kings also had a good showing this weekend and ended up going 2-2 with wins over The Pas and Cross Lake in the round robin with their one loss coming against Thompson.

The Kings would face The Pas Once again in the Semi- Final losing a heart breaker 2 to 1 in penalty kicks and ended up finishing 3rd.

RD Parker out of Thompson beat The Pas in the Final 6 to 2 and they will win the Boy's Zone.

Bombers Drop A 6 To 3 Decision In Yorkton

The Flin Flon Bombers dropped their final game on their Southern road swing  in Yorkton this past Saturday by a score of 6 to 3 at the Westland Arena.

This was the first meeting between the two teams since the Bombers swept the Terriers in this past Springs Canterra Seeds Cup Final.

Mathys Morrissette opened up the scoring for Yorkton just 1:30 into the opening period, scoring on a nice back hander. Morrissette is actually the younger brother of former Bomber Crystopher Collin who suited up for Flin Flon between  2017 to 2019.

Ryder Mucha would reply for the Bombers on the powerplay just a few minutes later to tie the game at 1.

Yorkton would strike two more times before the first period was over with Alex Morrison and Nathan Ramos both finding the back of the net to put the home team up 3 to 1 after one.

Noah Martin got his first SJHL regular season start for the Bombers and was pulled after the first period after giving up 3 goals on 12 shots.

Finn Werner would come into the game and started the second period. Werner had started the first 5 games of the season for Flin Flon  and has been rock solid with a GAA of 1.77 and a Save % of .937.

Morrison was able to get his second of the night just 2:34 into the middle frame and this would stand up as the game winner.

Dylan Carron would score his second in as many games to get the Bombers within one once again, but that is as close as they would get this night. Dylan Brass scored just a few minutes later to restore the two goal lead for Yorkton at 5 to 3 entering the final period.

The two teams would exchange goals in the third period with home town product Ryder Mucha scoring his second of the night for the Bombers,  before Peter Godley put the game away with an empty netter.

Finn Werner stopped 26 out of 28 shots for Flin Flon coming in relief while  veteran Terrier netminder Callum Craig stopped 31 of 34 to pick up the win.

Even though the Bombers lost the game it was still a pretty decent road trip with the Bombers going 2-2. The trip began with a 4 to 2 loss in Melville on Tuesday and a 3 to 0 win over Weyburn on Wednesday and a 4 to 1 win over Estevan on Friday.

It was a very emotional road trip with the futures in the blockbuster trade with the Humboldt Broncos announced on Thursday. Humboldt had sent Goalie Charlie Tritt, Defenseman Ryder Knutson and Forward Connor Miller at last year’s trade deadline to help the Bombers push for a Championship. As we know it worked out pretty well with the Bombers winning their first League Championship in 33 years.

Thursday the futures were announced on who was  going to Humboldt, with three talented forwards making  their way to the Broncos including Jack Martin, Ryan Ulmer and Leo Seitz .

All three of these players were part of the squad that helped Flin Flon win the league last season  and all three will be able to step into Humboldt's lineup this year and help the Broncos compete for another League Championship.

Head Coach Cole McCaig had this to say about the deal. " We had a team meeting with the three players that were picked by Humboldt, it was very emotional with a lot of tears that were shed. We are losing three really good players who are also really good human beings. They have been great ambassadors in the community and they will be very tough to replace. We now need to move forward as a group,  and now we need to send a statement to the rest of the league that we are still one of the team's to get through to win this  league."

Now the work begins for the Bombers to try and find players to fill these spots which will not be easy as they are all tremendous players and people.

Flin Flon has made a key signing with the announcement of 2006 born forward Nathan Helfenstein who was a late cut of the Brookes Bandits.

Helfenstein comes from the U-21 Elite League in Switzerland and picked up 40 points in 47 games and will hopefully fill some of the offensive void with the loss of Seitz, Ulmer and Martin.

So after this past week’s Southern road trip the Bombers are 4-2 and sit in top spot in the UPL Division. The good news for the Bombers is they will play 6 of their next 7 games at home including a pair of games this weekend against the Estevan Bruins.

Games are set to go at 7:30 pm on both Friday and Saturday night.

Bombers Complete The Trade With Humboldt

The futures in the trade with the Humboldt Broncos  from last January was finally announced today.

This was a trade that will definitely  benefit both teams.

Last January the Bombers acquired Goalie Charlie Tritt, Defenseman Ryder Knutson and Forward Connor Miller to help push for a League Championship.

As we all know, the trade paid off and the Bombers were able to win their first league title in 33 years.

All three of these players were instrumental in the team winning a Provincial title and getting a chance to go to a National Championship.

Tritt was named the league's top netminder and Miller was selected the SJHL Playoff MVP.

Today we found out the pieces going to Humboldt as three talented forwards will make their way to the Broncos including Jack Martin, Ryan Ulmer and Leo Seitz .

All three of these players were part of the squad that helped Flin Flon win the league last season  and all three will be able to step into Humboldt's lineup this year and compete for another League Championship.

The Bombers make their way to Estevan tonight to face the Bruins and are currently 1-1 on this road trip after blanking Weyburn 3-0 on Wednesday night. The road trip will come to an end tomorrow night in Yorkton in a rematch from last Spring's Canterra Seeds Cup Final.

Kodiaks Ready To Take On The Lazers

It is game day at the Creighton Oval Field Of Dteams , as the Kodiaks will play host to the Lanigan Lazers.

Creighton is 1-1 after beating St Brieux in their home opener,  and then they dropped a 69 to 37 decision against the top team in the Conference, Carrot River last week.

Lanigan comes to Creighton with a record of 2-1, so this game will have big playoff implications.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk is looking forward to today's matchup, and knows his team is always tough at home. " Absolutely, I was thinking about this the other day that we never  lost a single home game in the Northern League,  for what ever reason we played some really good teams. Even playing out of Conference 2 last year, we did lose some home games , but we won more than we lost. Home matters for what ever reason? Whether the bus drive, intimidation, knowing your field, your fans of course, you just feel better in your own locker room and preparation is totally different. We are extremely excited and we are loking to protect our home field tonight."

Kickoff is at 4pm at the Creighton Field today and don't forget that Northland Ford will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Lord's Bounty Food Bank.

It is part of the We Scare Hunger Campaign going on for the entire month of October. You can come out to cheer on the Kodiaks and  help them fill the box of a new F-150.

Soccer Zones In Flin Flon This Weekend

It is a big weekend for the two Hapnot Soccer teams as they will be hosting Zones this weekend at both the Phantom Lake Field and in Creighton.

The Hapnot Queens are the defending champions and will play their first game at 9am tomorrow against MBCI out of The Pas at the Phantom Lake field.

The Hapnot Kings will play their first game also against The Pas at 10:30am at Phantom.

There will also be teams in from Thompson, Norway House and Cross Lake.

Round Robin will continue through Friday with the Playoffs starting  on Saturday at 9am.

The Boy's Final will be played on Saturday at 3pm followed by the Girl's Final at 4:30pm.

Werner Shines In Bombers Victory

Finn Werner was fantastic and he stopped all 33 shots fired in his direction as the Flin Flon Bombers blanked the Weyburn Red Wings 3 to 0 last night at the White Cap Resources Centre.

This will help avenge a 4 to 2 loss in Melville the night before.

After a scoreless first period, Ryan Ulmer scored his first of the season just over two minutes into the second frame in what would stand up as the game winner.

Werner did the rest and was one of the big  keys for the Bomber victory.

Rhett Ewen scored the other two goals,  and his first one was a beauty where he was able to finish off a nice tik tak toe play with his linemate Ryder Mucha. Brayden Bruce started the play when he was able to find Mucha at the side of the Weyburn net, before Mucha flipped the puck out  front  to Ewen who was able to tap it in.

Ewen would score again with  a big insurance goal late in the second period to give Flin Flon the 3 to 0 lead going into the final period. There was no scoring in the third period.

Neither team could muster anything on the powerplay with the Bombers going 0 for 7 while the Wings wound up 0 for 4.

With the win,  Flin Flon will improve to 3 -1 on the season and Weyburn will fall to 3-2.

Today is the day where the Bombers will have to complete the Humboldt trade from last year's deadline that sent Charlie Tritt, Ryder Knutson and Connor Miller to the Bombers for their Championship run.

Miller's rights reverted back to the Broncos this season and three additional players from Flin Flon's roster will be sent to the Broncos. The trade go's down today but will not be announced til Sunday.

Flin Flon will get a much deserved day off today before making their way to Affinity Place to face the Estevan Bruins as their Southern road swing will continue on Friday night.

Then on Saturday,  it will be a rematch of the Canterra Seeds Cup final from this past spring as the Bombers will face the Yorkton Terriers where they won their first League Title in 33 years.

No doubt there will be a lot of emotion in Yorkton and I am sure the Terriers will be up for this one.

After wrapping up the 4 game road trip on Saturday the Bombers will return to the Whitney Forum to face the Estevan Bruins next Friday and Saturday.
